Meet Rocket (ID6016)

Rocket is a lovable senior dog looking for someone to share his golden years with. He came into rescue after the passing of his owner. His owner's family couldn't bear the thought of him ending up in a shelter but knew they weren't the right fit for him, so they brought him home and reached out to rescue for help. In his previous home, Rocket lived with another dog and a young child who he was fond of, especially when they dropped or slipped him snacks. Rocket was born with bilateral entropion, a painful condition where the eyelids roll inward and scratch the corneas. This was corrected in early 2024. Due to living with this condition for most of his life, Rocket developed Pigmentary Keratitis, which is a result of chronic inflammation of the eyelids. Additionally, he was diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), a slow-progressing, non-painful condition that often begins with difficulty seeing at night. Unfortunately, Rocket's PRA has worsened, and he is now considered visually impaired. Despite this, his ophthalmologist recommends continuing an eye health supplement, which can be found on Amazon, at Sam’s Club, or at Costco for about $30/month. Rocket is up to date on his vaccines, neutered, crate-trained, and working on his leash manners. He does get excited at times and may jump up to show affection. True to his Ridgeback nature, he is initially cautious around strangers but will relax once he senses they are trustworthy. When he hears other dogs barking, he prefers to turn around and head back inside rather than engage. Rocket loves being close to his person and sometimes becomes a tripping hazard if you haven't noticed him lying at your feet. Due to his vision loss, his ophthalmologist has recommended that he be the only dog in his new home, as he may perceive new dogs as a threat, unable to read their body language. Rocket is currently being fostered in the Biloxi, MS area and is ready to find a loving home to enjoy the rest of his years.
